Instruments & Equipment
Instruments we trust enough to put our name on
We only sell equipment we would — and do — use ourselves in the field. Every manufacturer partnership on this page was built around technical conviction, not distribution margins. If we recommend it to a client, it is because we have surveyed with it, interpreted its data, and stood behind the results.
Our training programmes remain instrument-agnostic. We teach the physics and methodology — not a brand. The instruments listed here are those we recommend when clients ask what we would purchase for their application. Learn more about our training →

Geophex Ltd.
Geophex is a geophysical research and instrumentation company founded in 1983 and based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Its GEM family of broadband, multi-frequency EM sensors pioneered digital frequency-domain electromagnetics: a single instrument can transmit up to ten simultaneous frequencies, mapping apparent electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility while detecting buried metal and voids. Where GPR struggles — conductive clays, saline coastal soils, brownfield sites — broadband EM is often the method that still delivers, which is why we pair Geophex sensors with our radar systems on challenging ground across the Eastern Mediterranean and the Gulf.
Broadband EM Sensor
GEM-2 Ski
Multi-frequency handheld & UAV EM — Geophex’s flagship
The GEM-2 measures apparent electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of the ground and detects buried metal and voids, with a powerful transmitter and wide coil separation reaching investigation depths of up to 10 m. Its defining capability is frequency programmability: the operator selects up to ten simultaneous frequencies across the full 30 Hz–93 kHz band, tailoring the response to target type and soil conditions — or mimicking the coil geometry of legacy single-frequency instruments, effectively replacing several sensors with one. At 3.6 kg it deploys handheld or as a UAV payload with the optional UAV kit.
Key specifications
| Frequency range | 30 Hz – 93 kHz, up to 10 simultaneous frequencies |
| Measured quantities | Apparent conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, in-phase & quadrature |
| Depth of investigation | Up to ~10 m (target- and soil-dependent) |
| Weight / length | 3.6 kg · 183 cm ski |
| Positioning | Integrated GPS, real-time |
| Software | GEMex (Android, real-time display), EMExport & Inversion utilities |
| Deployment | Handheld · UAV (optional kit) |
High-Power Broadband EM
GEM-2H
Extended-power variant for deeper or noisier ground
The GEM-2H is the higher-power evolution of the GEM-2 platform, with customer-adjustable operating frequencies spanning 30 Hz to 96 kHz. The increased transmitter moment improves signal-to-noise in conductive or electromagnetically noisy environments — urban brownfields, coastal plains, industrial sites — where standard-power EM instruments begin to lose resolution at depth.
Key specifications
| Frequency range | 30 Hz – 96 kHz, user-adjustable |
| Transmitter | High-power option of the GEM-2 architecture |
| Data output | In-phase & quadrature per frequency; conductivity / susceptibility |
Concentric-Coil EM Sensor
GEM-3 & GEM-3R
Handheld disc & cart configurations
The GEM-3 packages the same electronics and firmware as the GEM-2 into a concentric, coplanar coil head — a symmetric geometry prized in UXO and metal-detection work for its stable, well-characterised target response. It is available as a handheld disc for detailed sweeps and as the GEM-3R, a scaled-up pushcart configuration for higher-productivity coverage of larger areas with the same multi-frequency capability.
Key specifications
| Coil geometry | Concentric coplanar transmitter / receiver |
| Electronics | Shared GEM-2 platform — comparable features and options |
| Configurations | Handheld disc (GEM-3) · pushcart (GEM-3R) |
| Operation | Multi-frequency, real-time in-phase & quadrature |
Multi-Sensor EM Arrays
GEM-3 Array & GEM-5 Array
Flat-panel arrays for wide-swath coverage
For programmes where survey productivity and positional consistency matter — munitions response, corridor clearance, large-area site investigation — the GEM-3 configuration scales into a flat-panel array: a single large transmitter coil surrounding multiple receivers, collecting several sensor channels in one pass. The GEM-5 Array extends the same array concept on Geophex’s newer sensor generation. Arrays can be vehicle-towed or platform-mounted depending on the site.
Key specifications
| Architecture | Single large transmitter coil, multi-receiver flat panel |
| Families | GEM-3 Array · GEM-5 Array |
| Deployment | Towed or platform-mounted, project-configured |
Special Platforms & Custom Builds
Robotic · Marine · Airborne
GEM sensors beyond the standard configurations
Geophex has a four-decade track record of adapting its sensor platform to non-standard carriers. GEM-2, GEM-3 and GEM-3 Array instruments have been integrated on robotic ground vehicles; waterproofed variants operate in shallow-water and surf-zone conditions; fully custom undersea sensors are built to application from standard components; and the GEM-2A is the company’s programmable broadband airborne EM instrument for geological investigation. If a survey problem does not fit a catalogue product, Geophex engineers a configuration that does — and we manage that specification process on our clients’ behalf.
Available configurations
| Robot-mounted | GEM-2 / GEM-3 / GEM-3 Array on unmanned ground vehicles |
| Shallow water | Waterproofed GEM-2, GEM-3R and Array variants |
| Undersea | Custom-built per application from standard components |
| Airborne | GEM-2A programmable broadband airborne EM |

SMG Gravity
SMG is a Cambridge University spin-out that has commercialised a new class of gravimeter based on Vibrating Beam Accelerometer (VBA) MEMS technology. Their instruments occupy the performance space between traditional spring-mass gravimeters and the emerging — but far larger and costlier — quantum gravimetry systems, and are the first MEMS gravimeters to have reached commercial field deployment. SMG’s defence programme, backed by UK Defence Innovation, has demonstrated the technology’s ability to map buried structures including tunnels and underground voids.
Portable Field Gravimeter
GAIA-FIELD
MEMS VBA — next-generation field gravimetry
GAIA-FIELD is SMG’s flagship portable gravimeter for terrestrial surveys. Its active gimbal system and VBA MEMS sensor deliver measurement resolution below 1 µGal with a standard deviation below 5 µGal at 180 seconds — performance previously available only in much heavier, more fragile instruments. Onboard real-time corrections for tide, drift, temperature and Bouguer offset reduce post-processing time significantly. Fully sealed to IP68 and rated from −20°C to +45°C, it has been field-proven in Australia, Wales, and multiple defence trial environments.

Why MEMS Gravimetry
The technology gap SMG closes
Traditional spring-mass gravimeters (Scintrex, Lacoste & Romberg) are mature but
mechanically fragile, temperature-sensitive, and require careful levelling procedures.
Quantum gravimeters offer exceptional absolute accuracy but remain laboratory instruments
costing an order of magnitude more and weighing tens of kilograms.
SMG’s VBA MEMS sensor occupies the gap: it achieves sensitivity competitive with the
best field spring gravimeters, in a 5.5 kg system that auto-levels in under 10 seconds
and acquires a reading in 30–90 seconds. Onboard drift, tide, and thermal correction
reduces the skill barrier for field teams without compromising data integrity.
For defence and dual-use applications, SMG’s UK Defence Innovation-backed programme
demonstrated detection and mapping of buried anomalies — including tunnels and
underground voids — using this technology.
